Appositive Relative Clauses, At-issueness, and Timing in Discourse

چکیده
It is standardly assumed that there is a distinction between truth-conditional content (e.g. entailment) and non-truth-conditional content (e.g. presupposition and implicature). Another, more recent distinction is made between at-issue content (the “main point” of the utterance) and not-at-issue content (in some sense “secondary” to the main point). Ever growing evidence that those two distinctions do not characterize the same two classes of meaning: o Non-truth-conditional content is typically not at-issue. o But: truth-conditional content can come in two flavors, as at-issue or not-at-issue (see Böer & Lycan 1976, Bach 1999, Chierchia & McConnell-Ginet 2000, Potts 2005, Murray 2010, 2014, AnderBois et al. 2013, Syrett & Koev to appear).

Experimental Evidence for the Truth Conditional Contribution and Shifting Information Status of Appositives
Appositive constructions (My friend Sophie, (who is) a classical violinist, performed a piece by Mozart.) have stood at the center of debates concerning the range of possible meanings, and more specifically the status of not-at-issue entailments. However, it remains an open question what precisely their semantic contribution is to the sentence in which they appear. Here, we address this questio...
متن کاملAt-issue Proposals and Appositive Impositions in Discourse
Potts (2005) and many subsequent works have argued that the semantic content of appositive (non-restrictive) relative clauses, e.g., the underlined material in John, who nearly killed a woman with his car, visited her in the hospital, must be in some way separate from the content of the rest of the sentence, i.e., from at-issue content. At the same time, there is mounting evidence from various ...

15 sentence in which they appear. Here, we address this question head-on experimentally. We first investigate the information status of appositives and find that while nominal appositives (e.g. a classical violinist) and sentence-medial appositive relative clauses (e.g. who is a classical violinist) are largely not at issue, sentence-final appositive relative clauses can become at issue, as wit...
متن کاملInternal and External Heads in Appositive Constructions
This article discusses a number of complex appositive constructions, and compares them to regular nonrestrictive relative clauses and appositions in some Romance, Germanic and Slavic languages. Special attention is paid to the existence of so-called additional head NPs, and additional pronouns and determiners in appositive constructions. It is argued that almost all of the constructions under d...
متن کاملThe structure-prosody interface of restrictive and appositive relative clauses in Dutch and German
This paper reports a study on the structure-prosody interface of embedded restrictive and appositive relative clauses in Dutch and German. The first restrict the class to which the antecedent in the main clause refers, whereas the latter denote an additional property of the antecedent. How this difference is reflected in prosody is topic of investigation. For both languages a perception experim...
